And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.</span></em></p><p><em><span>Genesis, Chapter 1:1-5 (KJV)</span></em></p></div><p><span>In Celtic theology there is a concept that weaves its way through ones understanding of God. It&#8217;s the understanding that God is all around us, above and below us. But it&#8217;s not just that God is all around us. It is also the belief that God is </span><em><span>within</span></em><span> us&#8230;a divine presence that has brought creation into being. Creation - not as separate from God but intimately woven into the very essence of God.</span></p><p><em><strong><span>In the beginning God created.</span></strong></em></p><p><span>When I think of that initial moment of God breathing imagination into the formlessness of what Genesis calls </span><em><span>&#8220;the deep&#8221;,</span></em><span> I think of a mighty yet loving breath. Giving part of God&#8217;s essence over to this new endeavor as God moved over the face of the waters. Each particle a spark of Spirit.</span></p><p><span>And there was light. And there was dark. And it was good.</span></p><p><span>And there was God&#8230; all around, above and below&#8230;and </span><em><span>within</span></em><span>.</span></p><p><span>The first chapter of Genesis is a proper place to start if we are to understand the heart of early Celtic Christianity. In the first centuries after Jesus&#8217; life and death&#8230;I like to imagine a time before there were questions. Before there were doubts about the meaning and purpose of religion.</span></p><p><span>I imagine a time when there was simply wonder and awe. A time when there was a longing to be near this beautiful divine presence who had walked this earth. Who showed people what was possible with God&#8217;s divine spark </span><em><span>within</span></em><span> them.</span></p><p><span>The early Celts understood wonder and awe especially when it came to how they understood the world. And for them, God was not a theory or something to be debated. God was concretely intertwined with how they understood existence. And so their everyday lives became a practice of witnessing the presence of God in all that they did. The divine spark came alive.</span></p><p><span>Written in the early 5th century (as tradition suggests), St. Patrick&#8217;s Breastplate names this living spark:</span></p><div class="callout-block" data-callout="true"><p><em><span>I arise today</span></em></p><p><em><span>Through strength of heaven</span></em></p><p><em><span>Light of sun,</span></em></p><p><em><span>Radiance of moon,</span></em></p><p><em><span>Splendor of fire,</span></em></p><p><em><span>Speed of lightening,</span></em></p><p><em><span>Swiftness of wind,</span></em></p><p><em><span>Depth of sea,</span></em></p><p><em><span>Stability of earth,</span></em></p><p><em><span>Firmness of rock.</span><strong><span>[1]</span></strong></em></p></div><p><span>Maybe this is how the early Celts would have described the great deep of Creation. Radiance and Splendor. Speed and Swiftness. Depth and Stability. Firmness.</span></p><p><span>Because the great deep on that first day wasn&#8217;t without divine presence. It was full of divinity. A presence that was in the midst of creating. Dreaming. Planning. Building.</span></p><p><span>The closest I have ever come to understanding this moment of creative anticipation was on a dive trip off the Cayman Islands at Bloody Bay Wall (an ominous name for sure). Bloody Bay Wall drops down to over 3,000 feet into the unknown depths of the earth.</span></p><p><span>Being there with an almost endless expanse below me was one of the most profound moments of my life. Our dive master had instructed us to move away from the wall&#8230;.about 50 feet&#8230;so that you could hang at zero buoyancy in the middle of the expanse. That&#8217;s when I turned around so that the wall was behind me. And I gazed upon the deep. I floated in silence.</span></p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!zVOc!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fd72371cc-5e75-4c63-be2b-6a039985453e_4000x3000.heic" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!zVOc!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fd72371cc-5e75-4c63-be2b-6a039985453e_4000x3000.heic 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!zVOc!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fd72371cc-5e75-4c63-be2b-6a039985453e_4000x3000.heic 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!zVOc!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fd72371cc-5e75-4c63-be2b-6a039985453e_4000x3000.heic 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!zVOc!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fd72371cc-5e75-4c63-be2b-6a039985453e_4000x3000.heic 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!zVOc!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fd72371cc-5e75-4c63-be2b-6a039985453e_4000x3000.heic" width="1456" height="1092" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/d72371cc-5e75-4c63-be2b-6a039985453e_4000x3000.heic&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:1092,&quot;width&quot;:1456,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:null,&quot;bytes&quot;:1139670,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/heic&quot;,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:true,&quot;topImage&quot;:false,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:&quot;https://theweavingwisdomproject.substack.com/i/208356051?img=https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fd72371cc-5e75-4c63-be2b-6a039985453e_4000x3000.heic&quot;,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!zVOc!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fd72371cc-5e75-4c63-be2b-6a039985453e_4000x3000.heic 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!zVOc!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fd72371cc-5e75-4c63-be2b-6a039985453e_4000x3000.heic 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!zVOc!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fd72371cc-5e75-4c63-be2b-6a039985453e_4000x3000.heic 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!zVOc!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fd72371cc-5e75-4c63-be2b-6a039985453e_4000x3000.heic 1456w" sizes="100vw" loading="lazy"></picture><div class="image-link-expand"><div class="pencraft pc-display-flex pc-gap-8 pc-reset"><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container restack-image"><svg aria-hidden="true" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 20 20" fill="none" stroke-width="1.5" stroke="var(--color-fg-primary)" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><g><path d="M2.53001 7.81595C3.49179 4.73911 6.43281 2.5 9.91173 2.5C13.1684 2.5 15.9537 4.46214 17.0852 7.23684L17.6179 8.67647M17.6179 8.67647L18.5002 4.26471M17.6179 8.67647L13.6473 6.91176M17.4995 12.1841C16.5378 15.2609 13.5967 17.5 10.1178 17.5C6.86118 17.5 4.07589 15.5379 2.94432 12.7632L2.41165 11.3235M2.41165 11.3235L1.5293 15.7353M2.41165 11.3235L6.38224 13.0882"></path></g></svg></button><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container view-image"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="currentColor" stroke-width="2" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" class="lucide lucide-maximize2 lucide-maximize-2"><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line></svg></button></div></div></div></a></figure></div><p><span>The depth felt like an impossibility. I don&#8217;t remember walking. What I do remember was being carried. Carried down the aisle of Second Baptist Church in Belton, South Carolina. Carried by a God who loved me beyond anything I had ever felt before. In that moment I knew something that was beyond words. And from that day forward, I never </span><em><strong><span>ever</span></strong></em><span> felt separate from God.</span></p><p><span>I am not Baptist anymore. I am an Episcopal priest, and my theology has changed over the years. The theology of the altar call doesn&#8217;t ring true for how I understand the presence of God or how I understand things like salvation and redemption and forgiveness.</span></p><p><span>However, what does ring true is what I felt on that day when I walked down the aisle. God was all around me.</span></p><p><span>I have described it to people as the sense that God has always been with me or that God has never left me. I have described it as a deep peace I have often felt in moments of uncertainty. I can also tell you that I wouldn&#8217;t have made it through some very dark times if it wasn&#8217;t for this ever-present reality of God.</span></p><p><span>But those descriptions are still just words. Insufficient explanations of a divine truth that will be forever beyond my meager human understanding. And I am always aware of the limitations of those words, of the futility of trying to explain how God </span><em><span>feels.</span></em></p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a That&#8217;s the day I attended a Celtic service at St. Stephen&#8217;s Episcopal Church, in Richmond, Virginia. Those feelings of God&#8217;s closeness started to settle in my soul in a more tangible way. Feelings swirled with words and words became an embodied experience. I knelt to pray for the first time ever. I ate the bread and I drank the wine. I sat in silence amongst candlelight as a healing prayer minister placed her hands on my shoulders and told me I was loved. I cried. I let every word and feeling wash over me in this deep memory of God in and around me. Above and below me.</span></p><p><em><strong><span>This was home. This was who I knew God to be.</span></strong></em></p><p><span>It was a tangible knowing that stretched back through history for generations upon generations. To the earth and to the heavens. To the seas and to the sky. And God held me.</span></p><p><span>Looking back over the years, there were moments that could have shattered me. Abuse. Estrangement. Divorce. Financial instability. Single parenting. But I can look back and feel the all-encompassing presence of God carrying me just the way God carried me that day at Second Baptist Church. And even though my words are insufficient, I can feel it. And I know with my entire being that my life is held so tightly by this God who loves me.</span></p><div class="callout-block" data-callout="true"><p><em><span>This day I call to me;</span></em></p><p><em><span>God&#8217;s strength to direct me,</span></em></p><p><em><span>God&#8217;s power to sustain me.</span></em></p><p><em><span>God&#8217;s wisdom to guide me,</span></em></p><p><em><span>God&#8217;s vision to light me,</span></em></p><p><em><span>God&#8217;s ear to my hearing,</span></em></p><p><em><span>God&#8217;s word to my speaking,</span></em></p><p><em><span>God&#8217;s hand to uphold me,</span></em></p><p><em><span>God&#8217;s pathway before me,</span></em></p><p><em><span>God&#8217;s shield to protect me&#8230;</span><strong><span>[3]</span></strong></em></p></div><p><span>And so I go back to these words from the Celtic tradition and I can hear my feelings of God translated onto the page. Affirmed by generations who have also understood that feeling. Written by faithful followers who were able to express the inexpressible.</span></p><p><span>What I know now is that the Celtic tradition has been a life-giving home for me for many years. But it wasn&#8217;t until my trip to Iona this summer that I understood how life-giving this spiritual tradition has actually become. Iona (an island off of the western coast of Scotland) is by many accounts, the heart of early Celtic Christianity&#8230;a thin place steeped in ancient rhythms of prayer and nature, where the indwelling of God is part of all that is.</span></p><p><span>The Celtic saints and mystics from this place explained exactly how I began my journey with God at age 8. They described a God I knew so well through words I never had. This was the assurance that what I felt back then was grounded in something so much deeper than any one denomination or church or teacher could provide.</span></p><p><span>It was an experience of God that was elemental to humanity. Before Christianity became the instrument of institutions. Before it was used to solidify power and dominance. Before it was a defining factor of who deserved dignity and personhood. Before it was used to justify hierarchies and hegemony.</span></p><p><span>I often imagine these early Celtic followers of Christ simply wanting to learn about this person whom they had heard about. This person who was so radical that he terrified emperors and upset political and social structures. This person who knew no boundaries of love and inclusion and justice. This person who taught about mercy and forgiveness and grace.</span></p><p><span>And as they came to know the fullness of the love of God, they started to put their experience into words&#8230;</span></p><div class="callout-block" data-callout="true"><p><em><span>The guarding of the God of life be on you,</span></em></p><p><em><span>The guarding of loving Christ be on you,</span></em></p><p><em><span>The guarding of Holy Spirit be on you</span></em></p><p><em><span>Every night of your lives,</span></em></p><p><em><span>To aid you and enfold you</span></em></p><p><em><span>Each day and night of your lives.</span><strong><span>[4]</span></strong></em></p></div><p><span>For these early Celts, life wasn&#8217;t immune to suffering and pain. Their faith wasn&#8217;t about escaping hardship for some utopia eternity. But I think it is fair to say that their experience of darkness was always balanced by the gift of light. Joy kept winning out, over and over again. And that joy wasn&#8217;t the absence of hardship. It was the assurance that God was above and below them, beside and behind them. It was the promise that God was walking with them straight through what was broken into the promise of what was to be healed.</span></p><p><span>And that joy and that healing wasn&#8217;t relegated to one group over another. This was faith before it became divided by theological differences and cultural norms. I might even be so bold as to say that it was faith that was as genuine as faith could get.</span></p><p><span>It is that genuineness that calls me to go ever deeper into the Celtic tradition of Christianity. To seek out what it would look like if we began to truly see God above and below, beside and behind all of humanity.</span></p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link
